Kohl's Corp. (Erie County) plans to build three department stores, in Orchard Park, Lancaster and Amherst that would open during 2005. Employment is estimated at 450.

The Connection (Chautauqua County), a Minnesota-based company, selected Jamestown as the site of a new call center creating 400 jobs.

Business Contractions

New this Month

Oneida Ltd. is considering closing its Buffalo China (Erie County) plant, eliminating 450 jobs. Oneida began talks on a shutdown proposal with Local 76A. The union represents 375 hourly workers.

American Allsafe (Erie County) will shut down its manufacturing operation in the City of Tonawanda by December 31 and eliminate 116 jobs. The plant makes safety equipment.

UPDATE: Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (Erie County) will cut management and staff positions by the end of September. Some reductions are planned at Goodyear Dunlop's Town of Tonawanda tire plant. This will affect only salaried workers and non-bargaining unit positions. The unionized workers are covered by a three-year labor agreement ratified on September 15, which protects the plant shutdown.

UPDATE: City of Buffalo (Erie County) The state control board has rejected a cost-cutting proposal for Buffalo schools and the City.

Tops Markets (Erie County) has cut its work force at its Amherst corporate offices to about 200 people, after eliminating 119 jobs. Most of the cuts will be completed by September 20.

Vix Deep Discount (Erie & Niagara Counties) drugstores, filed for bankruptcy September 12 and plans to close all nine stores in Erie and Niagara counties in the next few months. More than 350 employees will lose their jobs.
