BUSINESS EXPANSIONS FOR THE HUDSON VALLEY REGION

Dutchess County

Orange County

Gold's Gym will open a new larger gym in the former Circuit City building on Dunning Road, in the Town of Wallkill. The new gym will feature a coffee and smoothie bar and loads of fitness classes, including yoga, indoor cycling and CrossFit, a strength program. No job numbers were announced.


Helios Power Capital
has purchased the Danskammer power plant in Orange County from Dynegy for $3.5 million. As a condition of the sale, Helios and Dynegy repaid $9.3 million in back property taxes to Orange County. A recent surge in energy prices fueled the decision to re-fire the Danskammer plant. The original plan was to dismantle and sell off any usable parts. Representative from IBEW Local 320, who represents the 60 employees that were laid off, are in discussion with the new owners to facilitate the possible rehiring of its members if and when the plant becomes operational again.
 


Hudson Heritage Federal Credit Union
opened a new branch on Dolson Avenue in Middletown. The new branch features internet stations where members can sign up for online banking and learn about other products that the bank offers. It also has a 24-hour drive-up ATM and drive-up teller hours that opens 8:30am Monday through Saturday. No job numbers were announced.


Ulster Savings Bank
opened a new branch on Route 300 in the Town of Newburgh. The new branch offers complete banking, lending, investment, tax preparation, payroll and insurance products and services. No job numbers were announced.

Sullivan County

Kutshers Country Club and Resort in the Town of Thompson was recently sold for $9 million to an Indian company that will transform the 1,325 acre property into a world-class health and wellness center. The new owner, Indian media mogul Subhash Chandra, plans to spend about $90 million to completely remodel the facilities. The renovation plans call for a health and wellness center with elements of physical fitness, golf, tennis, but no gambling. The Sullivan County Industrial Development Agency provided an incentive package to facilitate the purchase, including partial real estate tax abatements through a 20-year payment in lieu of taxes program and sales abatement.

Westchester County

Entergy Corp. recently hired 16 new entry level workers at the Indian Point Power Plant. The workers are members of UWUA Local#1-2, which represents about 370 workers at the plant.


MasterCard
announced plans to expand its offices in Purchase and add about 270 jobs to its workforce in Westchester County. The company will rent an additional 14,000 square feet of office space at 100 Manhattanville Road, near its headquarters at 2000 Purchase Street. The new hiring will occur over the next five years. MasterCard will spend about $8.9 million on construction as part of a $39 million total capital investment. The Westchester County Industrial Development Agency has tentatively approve the company for $1.2 million in sales tax breaks.
 


Montefiore Health Systems
recently opened its first Westchester County urgent care center at its medical group practice office in Yonkers. Montefiore Urgent Care will provide medical attention for non-life threatening illness or injuries at the Montefiore Medical Group Cross County office on Central Park Avenue. No job numbers were announced. Montefiore also operates two urgent care centers in the Bronx.

 

SoulCycle Spinning Studio, which offers full-body indoor cycling, will open a new facility at the Metro-North Railroad station in downtown Bronxville in 2014. The company also operates studios in Rye Brook, Scarsdale and Greenwich, Connecticut. No job numbers were announced.

 

Thornwillow Press, a company that makes limited edition books, invitations, stationary and handmade paper items announced plans to expand its workforce by 70 employees over the next three years. These new positions will include press operators, sales staff, shipping and receiving, bindery and custodial staff. The company recently purchased a 40,000 square-foot building in Newburgh for its current printing operations, with an additional 40,000 square-foot of empty space across the street and connected by a tunnel for future expansion.

BUSINESS CONTRACTIONS FOR THE HUDSON VALLEY REGION 

Dutchess County

Saint Francis Hospital and Health Center in Poughkeepsie filed a WARN notice with the New York State Department of Labor on December 26, 2013 in anticipation of a mass layoff. The layoffs affecting about 1,100 employees could begin as early as March 20, 2014. The layoffs will be probably be averted as there are 3 bidders, showing strong interest in acquiring the bankrupt hospital. Westchester Medical Center, Health Quest which owns Vassar Brothers Medical Center and Catholic Health Care System have all expressed interest in purchasing the hospital.

Westchester County

Avon informed state labor officials that it will lay off 142 workers in Westchester County around March 10, 2014. The filing with the New York State Department of Labor indicated the layoffs will mostly impact employees at Avon’s Service Model Transformation Project (SMT) at 44 South Broadway in White Plains. The company also expects to lay off 12 employees at its office on Midland Avenue in Rye.
