Description
A security/fire alarm installer installs, services or maintains security/fire alarm systems to detect and signal smoke, fire, intrusion, break-in, or movement. A license is not required to install alarm systems on motor vehicles, boats or airplanes. However, a security/fire alarm installer license is required for those who install "hard-wired" security/fire alarms and detectors. A license is not required to install battery-operated smoke/fire detection devices.
Age Requirement
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Licensing Requirements
Applicants may apply for a New York State security/fire alarm installer license to install security/fire alarm systems anywhere within New York State, based upon one of the
following qualifying categories:
(A) Examination and Education
If you are at least 18 years of age and new to the business, you must pass
a written examination, file an application for licensure accompanied by
the original passed exam notice, and provide proof of completion of at least 60
hours of qualifying education along with acceptable, prepaid fingerprint cards
to the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services.
(B) Experience and Education
If you have acquired at least 2 years of experience in installing, servicing or maintaining security/fire alarm systems (3,500 working hours, at 35 hours per week
for 100 weeks) within New York State between October 1, 1989 and September 30, 1992,
you may qualify for a security/fire alarm installer license without taking an examination.
You must submit an application for licensure that includes proof of appropriate
experience, proof of completion of the 60 hours of qualifying education and acceptable,
prepaid fingerprint cards to the New York State Department of State, Division of
Licensing Services.
(C) Licensed Master Electricians
If you want a New York Statewide license, you must file an application for licensure that includes proof of licensure as a master electrician and acceptable, prepaid fingerprint cards. By virtue of your being licensed as a master electrician, education, experience, and exam requirements are waived.
Licensed master electricians who wish only to practice in their local jurisdiction(s) may file an application for registration with the New York State Department of State, Division of Licensing Services, providing proof of licensure as a master electrician. Documented master electricians are exempt from all otherwise necessary licensing requirements.
Fees
$15 -- Written examination
$75 -- Fingerprints (payable to the Division of Criminal Justice Services) and the original security/fire alarm installer application.
$185 -- License, 2-year term
$100 -- License renewal, 2-year term
Master Electrician (Statewide)
$75 -- Fingerprints (payable to the Division of Criminal Justice Services) and the original security/fire alarm installer application.
$200 -- License, 2-year term
$100 -- License renewal, 2-year term
Master Electrician (Local Only)
$50 -- Registration, 2-year term

From January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007, there were 1,517 licenses issued for this occupation.
As of August 11, 2008, there were 3,247 active licenses outstanding for this occupation.
